Pharmacist and Patent Specialist
Julia Nunes is a Pharmacist and Patent Specialist with more than 5 years’ experience in patent prosecution, managing national and international patent applications with focus on the pharmaceutical, chemical, and biotechnological field. Ms. Nunes recently joined Licks Attorneys’ Rio de Janeiro office in 2023 to work with the prosecution of patent applications/patents at the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BRPTO), mainly performing searches, analyzing and reporting technical opinions from the BRPTO, preparing briefs to comply/contest said technical opinions, as well as preparing and replying third-party observations (pre-grant and postgrant oppositions) to align the best prosecution strategies for international clients. Mrs. Nunes has knowledge of the Brazilian Patent Statute, normative instructions, and examination guidelines issued by the Brazilian PTO, as well as the main intellectual property treaties.

- Represented a major Japanese Pharmaceutical Company in patent prosecution. The case was rejected by the BRPTO and upon careful review the client was alerted to the fact the rejection decision was undue since a series of mistakes were committed by the BRPTO. A strategy was proposed and aligned with the client that was able to revert the rejection decision during the appeal phase.
