Tech in-house counsel rub shoulders at licensing event in Rome

Explaining to your teenage kids what the patent pools do is tricky, says Via’s president, but high-tech rights holders have fully bought in to the message, finds Sarah Speight.
How do you explain to your teenage kids what a patent pool is?
That’s the conundrum faced by Kevin Mack when he joined Via Licensing as its president a few months ago.
After five minutes of spiel came the inevitable eye-rolling, so Mack had to think quickly of a way to engage his daughters.
The answer? Just consider your smartphones, he said, the apps you are using on them, and the wireless way you charge them. They all use technology protected by patents and are part of the licensing programmes that Via operates.
This was the tale regaled by Mack as he welcomed delegates to the Via Licensing Business Summit 2026, held in Rome this week (March 17-20), where WIPR was in attendance.
