ANPD’s Board of Directors appointed

President Bolsonaro appoints five Directors to govern the new ANPD

On October 15, 2020, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro appointed five directors to the new Board of the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD).                        Waldemar                         WALDEMAR GONÇALVES ORTUNHO JUNIOR
Chairman of the Board


                         Mandate: 6 years
                         Background: Colonel in the Brazilian Army, Chairman of Telebras since 2019. Mr. Junior is                          an Electronics Engineer who graduated from the Military Engineering Institute (IME) and                          completed a postgraduate degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Brasília.                          He has over 40 years of experience in the Defense and Communications Ministries, working                          on aspects of information technology: telecommunications, broadcasting, and computing.                        
                 

                                                                                                                                                           
                       Arthur                         ARTHUR PEREIRA SABBAT

                         Mandate: 5 years
                         Background: Colonel in the Brazilian Army, Director of Information Security in the Brazilian                          Institutional Security Cabinet. Mr. Sabbat is an information security expert with expertise                          in cybersecurity, data protection, and risk management. He has contributed to the                          development of Brazil’s National Policy for Information Security.                        
                 

                                                                                                                                                           
                       Joacil                         JOACIL BASILIO RAEL

                         Mandate: 4 years
                         Background: Former Brazilian Army, Advisor to Telebras. Mr. Rael is a Computer Engineer                          who graduated from the Military Engineering (IME). He also holds a Master’s degree in                          Computing and Systems from the IME and a Doctorate in Information Science from the                          University of Brasília.                        
                 

                                                                                                                                                           
                       Nairane                         NAIRANE FARIAS RABELO LEITÃO

                         Mandate: 3 years
                         Background: Attorney at Law. Ms. Leitão deals with regulatory law, privacy, and data                          protection matters.                        
                 

                                                                                                                                                           
                       Waldemar                         MIRIAM WIMMER

                         Mandate: 2 years
                         Background: Director of Telecommunication Services in the Communications                          Ministry. Ms. Wimmer has been working on telecommunications issues in                          government since 2007. She holds a Master’s degree in Public Law from the State                          University of Rio de Janeiro and a Doctorate in Communication and Cultural Policy                          from the University of Brasília. She also holds a CIPP/E certification issued by the                          International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). Ms. Wimmer teaches on                          law, technology, and innovation at the Brazilian Institute of Public Law. She also                          teaches digital law and data protection at several other institutions, including the                          Paulista School of Law, the Rio de Janeiro Institute of Technology and Society, and the                          National School of Public Administration.                        
                 

The Senate will still need to approve these nominations during scrutiny sessions scheduled for next week.
