DEI initiatives gaining traction in the Brazilian IP ecosystem
According to the “World Intellectual Property Indicators 2023” published by WIPO, 17% of the inventors listed in international patent applications published in 2022 are women. Although this number is still suboptimal, we must acknowledge the gradual improvement in the indicators of diversity in innovation: in 2008, women accounted for only 10.6% of patent applications as inventors.
Across the globe, DEI initiatives have been gaining traction in the IP and innovation ecosystem over the past decade and Brazil is no exception to this trend.
In 2022, the Brazilian patent and trademark office (Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial – INPI) published its first report on diversity in intellectual property, and in 2023, the federal government launched a programme aimed at encouraging start-ups headed by women.
