Administrative Order designates the BRPTO as an Institution of Science, Technology, and Innovation (ICT)
On Monday, June 23, the Federal Register published an Administrative Order designating the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BRPTO) as a Science, Technology, and Innovation Institution (ICT), with full legal effect. The designation is based on BRPTO/PR’s Ordinance #9/2024, Law #10,973/2004 (the Innovation Act), Law #13,243/2016 (the New Legal Framework for Science, Technology, and Innovation), and Decree #9,283/2018.
ICTs are entities that conduct basic or applied research activities, of a scientific or technological nature, developing new technologies or improving existing ones. Designating the BRPTO as an ICT will enable the Office to engage more directly and robustly in promoting research, development, and innovation. Furthermore, the BRPTO will assume a more active role in promoting innovation and interacting with companies, universities, and other research institutions.
The implementation, operation, and governance of ICT-BRPTO will be the responsibility of the General Coordination for the Development of Industrial Property, Business, and Innovation, led by Maria Eugênia Ramos Gallotti.
