U.S. intensifies pressure on Brazilian Government to exclude Huawei from its 5G bid

American authorities intensified the pressure on President Jair Bolsonaro to force him to edit a decree in order to restrict Huawei and other Chinese telecommunication companies from providing equipment for 5G in Brazil.

The Americans seek to convince Brazilian authorities within the Brazilian Institutional Security Office, claiming that the Chinese equipment represents a risk to Brazilian security given the potential leakage of sensitive data, especially in the area of Defense. The pressure escalated after no limitations were identified in Ordinance #418 that established the guidelines for the Brazilian 5G bid, which is expected to be launched at the end of this year.
